Trash & Recycling

Trash and recycling collection are included by Casella Waste Systems as contracted services. Residents are billed quarterly for these services as part of their water/sewer/refuse bill.

Tips to Help in Collection:
  • Each unit is allowed up to 5 (30 gallon) bags of household trash. There is on limit on recyclables.
  • The last Tuesday of the month is Bulk Collection pickup. In addition to household trash, each household/unit is ALLOWED 2 BULK ITEMS to be collected. No recyclables will be collected on bulk item week. See below for allowable items/details.
  • Garbage can be set out to the curb 24 hours prior to the scheduled pickup and must be removed within 24 hours after pickup. Failure to do so violates local law 50.22 and may result in enforcement action.
  • Items that are not accepted through regular or bulk garbage collection can be disposed of at the Machias Transfer Station.  See the website for a list of hours, fees, & accepted items. Transfer station tickets can be purchased at the clerk's office during regular hours or at various businesses in the area.

Prohibited Actions:
  • It is a violation of local law 50.20 for any resident of the village, owner, lessee or person in control of real property within the village to permit any person to bring in, place or deposit any refuse or recyclables originating from outside the village on any real property owned or leased by him or her or under his or her control for the purpose of disposal under the village operated waste disposal and recycling program.
  • It is a violation of 50.21 to place any materials into a trash receptacle located on village property unless the waste was generated at that location. Permitted waste would include picnic waste
  • No garbage, tires, batteries or trash (which shall include demolition debris) shall remain outside of any building on the property.

§ 50.25 PRESUMPTION OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPROPER DISPOSAL.
  • (A) In the case where waste is deposited in bags or containers that are not distinctively labeled, it shall be presumed that the waste is the responsibility of the person, or persons, that may be identifiable by inspection of the contents of the container or bag.
  • (B) In the event that identification cannot be determined by the inspection, it will be presumed that the waste is the responsibility of the occupant of single-family dwellings, or the owner of all other buildings or real property where the placement has been made. If placement is made on a public or private right-of-way, the closest private real property will be deemed to be the location of the violation.

YARDWASTE Drop-Off
Village residents may drop-off yard-waste and brush at the pile to the left of the Village Offices at 19 Pennsylvania Ave.
‍
‍BRUSH COLLECTION April thru October
‍
Brush Only, no yard waste pick-up is done curbside.
‍
LEAF COLLECTION October thru November (weather permitting)
Each Fall the Village DPW picks up leaves at the curbside. Leaves must be raked to the edge of the road but not in the road. Any leaves that the vacuum cannot reach will be left and can be raked out for the next round of service. The program begins in October when there are sufficient amounts of leaves to fill the truck and ends at the first snow event.  An annual announcement will be made regarding when the leaf pick up will begin and end.

*Bagged leaves or leaves in containers will not be picked up.
